Following his success at the “Autosport” Snetterton 3 Hour meeting Chris now continued his pursuit of the HSCC Guards Trophy Championship taking part in round five at the fantastic Spa Francorchamps circuit in Belgium.
Qualifying on Friday was on a dry, clean track, and despite being on period Dunlop’s, Chris managed to improve his best ever lap time at Spa from 2.56 to 2.54.6. More surprising he managed to qualify third in the GT Class, ahead of Alex Buncombe! However Graf Von Oeynhausen and Frank Stippler managed to eclipse this time for first and second on the grid.
Before the race we all wondered if we would get a shower or worse. As it turned out we didn’t, but the track was very slippery with oil on a number of corners throughout the race.
A rolling start and Chris progressed from tenth on the combined grid up to seventh by the first corner. For a while he kept in touch with the leading E Types, but slowly they opened up a gap, leaving Chris to battle with a couple of Chevrons and a Porsche for much of the race. He pitted for the mandatory pit stop just after thirty minutes (half distance) and thereafter held third place in the GT race. At the flag he was also seventh overall, just ahead of the very determined Porsche and so to the podium, for the 100th time since he started racing!
